“It’s like, here it comes. I'm gonna get a little depressed and go down a spiral.”
-Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is a singer, actress, and business mogul who has gone through many mental health challenges, like depression, anxiety, body image issues, and bipolar disorder.
She often uses her platform to advocate for mental health awareness and understanding.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, she talked about dealing with mental health challenges:
“You're not going to shame me for going through a difficult time. I'm going to hopefully stand up and say, ‘I'm not doing that great, but I'm okay, and I'm going to get through it, and I'm going to do all the steps necessary to get through it.’”

Selena is right; it’s important to take our mental health seriously and take steps to become healthy. Moreover, Selena is far from being alone.
According to the WHO, depression is very common, especially affecting those who have gone through severe loss, abuse, or other stressful events. Depressive episodes last most of the day, nearly everyday, for at least 2 weeks.
Symptoms include:
feeling sad, irritable, empty, guilty, worthless
having disrupted sleep, low energy, poor concentration, changes in appetite & weight
hopelessness about the future & suicidal thoughts
Many of the factors that influence depression (such as physical inactivity or harmful use of alcohol) are also known risk factors for diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory diseases.
So if you or anyone you know are displaying any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek help.
In her raw, candide interview about her documentary, My Mind and Me, Selena opens up on how she deals with a depressive episode:
“I immediately recognize the little things that I needed to do to get myself out of it. So I decided to watch things that were really well-written and beautiful and happy. I changed the music I was listening to, I wanted to listen to positive things. I wanted to feel like I could be inspired.
“It's something like taking a walk. It’s something like calling a therapist. If you have a sponsor, calling a sponsor.
“All of these little things that seem so minuscule. And like, oh, that won’t work, that doesn’t matter. It actually ultimately does.
“It’s by doing that everyday. And even just getting up and looking at yourself and being OK with who that person is on the other side.”
“My mental health is everything to me.”
