Stromae became one of the biggest French-speaking artists in 2010 after releasing
Alors on Danse.
So, people were shocked when Stromae disappeared — for 7 years.
His return in 2022 made headlines when he released an album that described the reasons behind his hiatus — depression, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts.
In an interview, Stromae shared his beliefs about people.
“We are all multiple. We are full of different characters...we are not summarized in a straitjacket, in a box.”
When asked if he uses music to cope with feelings of loneliness, Stromae responded by singing his song L’enfer (Hell):
“I’m not alone in feeling all alone
And that’s already something
And if I counted all the people like me
We’d be many
Everything I’ve been thinking about,
It’s crazy how many people have thought just the same.”
- Stromae
His strength in sharing his story inspired many people in France to contact psychiatrists and call France’s national suicide prevention number.
Even the director of the World Health Organization took notice and publicly thanked Stromae.
